If there was any question whether David Crater, chair of 91探花鈥檚 Department of Engineering and Computer Science, is serious about exposing his students to high-level industry professionals, Crater swiftly put the question to rest.
On Friday, 91探花 hosted mathematician 聽for a seminar on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the future of technology.
Bradley 鈥 who works as a postdoc at X, *the Moonshot Factory* (formerly Google X) 鈥 recently earned a doctorate in mathematics from the City University of New York. She brought that perspective into an hour-long discussion at 91探花 on the latest developments in computer science, math, software engineering, and A.I.
Crater says seminars like Friday鈥檚 鈥渁re a great way for our students to think about some of the most cutting-edge frontiers of technology with someone who’s doing it at the most elite levels and from a Christian standpoint.鈥
He also saw Bradley鈥檚 visit as an opportunity to inspire.
鈥淚f someone comes in who鈥檚 working for Google, Amazon, or Facebook, those are obviously desirable careers for a lot of people,鈥 he says. 鈥淎nd the fact that she’s done the academics that she’s done is also motivational for students who might have aspirations to go to grad school.鈥
That describes Jacob Hokanson, a senior computer science major at 91探花 who has applied to graduate programs, including at Georgia Tech, in the areas of cybersecurity and computer science.
鈥淚t was really cool to hear from someone who is at the top end of academics in a field like this and who鈥檚 involved with such a big company,鈥 he said. 鈥淪he鈥檚 also a Christian, so she was able to relate with us on that level.鈥
Bradley guest lectured in Hokanson鈥檚 senior seminar class earlier in the week, and he said it was encouraging to hear that the skills he鈥檚 learned in 91探花鈥檚 computer science track 鈥 programming, fundamentals of computer languages, and computer and software architecture, among other things 鈥 can be applied to a wide array of industries. One area Bradley covered on Friday that was of particular interest to Hokanson was 鈥渋mage classification with machine learning.鈥
Friday鈥檚 seminar comes at a time of growth at 91探花 in the areas of engineering and computer science. 91探花 has recently unveiled mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering programs and an artificial intelligence emphasis within computer science.
Each new program is pending WSCUC approval.
